We were really impatiently waiting for
the Honda Amaze. We don't know what is keeping Honda too long to
launch the Amaze. To cure our curiosity We decided to got to
Thailand to test drive the new Amaze. A silver Amaze was arranged in
there for us to test drive.

Honda Amaze is basically the sedan form of Brio.It is expected to launch in may 2013. The Amaze comes with a 1.5 l earth dream diesel engine in India. The Amaze will be under 4 m mark to get excise benefits.
I jumped on to the car at first to see
how it performs. While riding through the city the Amaze did not felt
like a diesel engine. It was pretty much responsive even at
1300rpm.The Amaze is really easy to drive in the city with sufficient
bottom end punch. The five speed manual gearbox is slick an
responsive. You require minimal gear changes in the city and the car
pulls well even in fourth and fifth fear in 1200rpms.Honda Amaze is
much for comfortable to ride than the Suzuki swift which has a
tremendous lag bellow 2000 rpm.
I was also stunned by the refinement of
that diesel engine. It was super quiet, and you can hardly hear any
noise. This is pretty astonishing for a diesel engine.
I escaped from the city to know the
taste of the power of the engine. The turbo genuinely kicks up at
1500 rpm and from their the car smoothly goes up to 140km mark. Put
your foot down and the car just thuds up to 100km in any gear. The
car is pretty much responsive at the midrange as well. The meat of
power band is delivered between 1800 and 3600 rpm. It is best to
shift gears up early to keep the car in pace. Revving the Amaze past
3600 rpm is useless as the car gets more noisier and power trails off
rapidly. Amaze is different from the free revving Honda tradition we
used to drive. But it will the best diesel engine in India in terms
of refinement and ride-ability.

Honda developed the I.6 l diesel engine
for Europe last year. Honda calls it the Earth Dream Diesel
Engine,Honda uses a fixed geometry turbo for the engine which will
cost less, but loses out while revving hard. It produces 120 HP of
power and 300 Nm of torque. Honda has scaled down the engine to a 1.5
l version to benefit from lower excise duties. The exact power and
torque figures of Honda Amaze for India is not revealed by Honda. We
expect the max power to be 95 or 100 HP and the max torque to be 270
Nm. Honda may launch a more powerful version of this engine for city
and civic as well in the coming years.
The suspension of the Amaze is not the
usual Honda. It is slightly different from that of the Biro's due to
the extra weight of the Diesel engine. The front suspension is
stiffened a bit and the rear is not tampered much. Amaze targets ride
quality more than handling as it is a sedan. We cant say the exact
ride quality of Amaze as the suspension will be re-tuned for Indian
roads. But Amaze handles the small undulations on the road with ease.
The steering is heavier than that of
the Brio and Amaze handles corners well. Although you may experience
some body roll it wont matter you that much. The EPS steering gives
plenty of feel and turns around the corners precisely.
Now it is time to find out how Amaze
looks like. At first glance Amaze looks more well proportioned than
the new Swift dz-ire which looks like a hatch with stubbed boot. The
front is identical to the Brio, but there are some tweaks to
recognize Amaze. The grille is changed into a two slot one with
chrome inserts. The air damp is redesigned and is body colored to
give Amaze a more elegant look and there are no fog lamps.

form the B pillar. The windows is extensively rounded at the rear.
The belt line similar to that of the Brio stops at the rear. A new
character line goes through the rear door handle to the wrapped
around rear tail lamps and ends there. The wrapped around tail lamps
are ideal to that of the city. The chromium lining on the tail gives
amaze more premium feel at the back. The new bumper looks aggressive
too. But you get a chopped out feeling when you look at the rear. But
Honda engineers have brilliantly sculpted the tail to reduce the
notch back effect. Overall amaze comes with some pleasant styling.
But Amaze has lost the funkiness that we liked in Brio.

Amaze is 3990 mm long and it has 60mm
more wheelbase than the Brio. When you step inside the cabin you will
be shocked by the space that Amaze offers. The Amaze has been
cleverly engineered to utilize out most of the space. The rear doors
are larger allowing you to get in and out easily Amaze has just 2410
mm of wheelbase(lesser than some hatchbacks)but offers acres of
legroom .The seats offer great support and you can have a comfortable
and relaxed journey on the back seat. The cabin has less width so
three abreast would we tight. The Brio has a large boot(larger than
in swift dzire) to carry your luggage for a week end outing.

The cabin shows many details about cost
cutting by Honda. The dashboard looks similar to that of the Brios
and it feels low grade and spartan. The driver seats don't height
adjustment on the amaze as well. However you get blue tooth and USB
connectible audio player on Amaze which is not available on Brio. You
will surely find the interiors are of low quality and features are
also not generous. Swift Dz ire offers much more sorted and high
grade interiors than the Amaze for sure.

Amaze will get dual SRS airbags, ABS
and EBD as safety features.
The amaze will be priced between 6 to 8
lakhs, so it will compete with Swift Dz ire,upcoming Mahindra Verito
and Tata Indigo ECS.
The ARAI specified fuel economy of
amaze is expected to be 26 km/l which is the highest in its class.
