Audi Q5 2014 review Luxury and Sportiness combined

Audi Q5 is a model we often forget behind the line of the smaller Q3 and bigger Q7. Q5 has been launched in Indian at 2009. The Q5 is more cheaper and affordable than the gigantic Q7, it has always been the needy one in the Audi’s Q series SUVs. So Audi has given it a minor but substantial face lift to make it a successful seller.

At a quick glance you won’t notice any changes. You have to ultra zoom your eyes to view the minor changes to the exteriors.Confused smile You will first notice the new hexagonal grille which takes time to realize that it is hexagonal. The slats in the grille differ according to the variants(Petrol,Diesel). The front bumper is new a small mouth and the fog lamps have been given more detailing with chrome surrounds. The headlights get a new cluster of day time running LEDs.
No changes are made to the side profile.  The rear tail lamps also get a new cluster of LEDs. Plus there is a new rear diffuser.
Overall Audi Q5 looks more boxy and powerful. But the face lifted version can be hardly distinguished from the previous version. Also the Q5 looks more like a luxury soft roader lacking off road potential.
The interiors are changed to look more high grade and luxuries than before. Audi is using the same engine, but with some tweaks. Audi has increased the max power by  5% and they are claiming that the mileage has increased  by 15%. As before the q5 is available in a 2.0 l  petrol and a 3.0 l diesel option as well.
We first jumped on the 3.0 l diesel to feel the changes made to the engine. The engine is far more quieter and refined even with  plenty of power on board. The engine is very smooth to drive. The engine is a V6 diesel with a common rail injection and variable vane turbo. It produces  produces max power of  245 HP(5 HP more than older car) of power and 59 Kgm of torque(8 Kgm more than older car). As the result the 1.8 ton rockets to 100 km in just 6.4 seconds. The engine is very responsive and fast from as low as 1200 rpm. When you ride it the pleasure you get is more faster and enthusiastic than the original speed of the vehicle. This motor will definitely be a huge hit on the Indian soil.

Next was the 2.0 l T petrol engine. Although it is not as fast as the diesel it is a good motor.  You can feel good grunt in midrange and top range. The car will climb up to 6500 rpm without any hesitation but you wont get that incredible feel in revving that you get on naturally aspirated engines. Also the engine tends to create some harsh noise as you rev it up.  The petrol develops 221 HP of power and 35.6 kgm of torque which makes the car reach 100km in 7.4 seconds. The tiptronic gearbox plays a crucial part in it by making right shifts at the right moment. The  speed gearbox puts you in the power zone of the car within seconds. The car has a super thrust at midrange which helps the car to pull up very fast indeed.

The ride quality of the new Q5 has increased considerably than the older one. The car absorbs everything put in front of it. The soft springs and dampening of the suspension gives the Q a more flat, composed and a luxurious ride. At back seat you won’t have to be bothered about the condition of the roads because the Q5 absorbs all the bumps without you feeling any of them.

The Audi Q3 comes with variable ratio steering and adaptive dampers which provides incredible handling. The EPAS steering gives plenty of feed back for the driver. The steering feels light and accurate around corners despite of q5s tons of cock-weight. The car has good body control and tires offer plenty of grip as well. The quattro system divides power between wheels according to the speeds which provides precise handling at high and low speeds.
Although it weights a  ton Audi Q3 SUV feels very agile and inspire plenty of confidence in corners. it is an enthusiasts delight despite is bulky SUV character.
The Audi Q5 is offered in three variants
  • 2.0 l petrol   -43.17 lakhs
  • 2.0 l diesel   -43.47 lakhs
  • 3.0 l diesel   -48.71 lakhs
