Fiat new Cross Punto Rendered

SUV trend is rising suddenly in Indian market. Now Indians love the big bulky muscular SUV s. Many manufacturers are developing their SUV s in market tempted by the success  of Renault Duster.

Many things have been going on lately in the mini SUV segment in India. Of course not even one mini SUV is launched in the market. But it is a harvest of mini SUV concepts in Indian market.Ford Ecosport will be the first compact SUV to Indian market which will be launched in April 2013.

Maruthi and Hyundai are also busy developing their mini SUV s to the market.  The Maruthi Suzuki Alpha and Hyundai Hexa space was showcased in the 2012 Indian auto expo. We can expect both these cars at 2014.

But creating a new SUV from scrap can be time consuming. So in order to get quick success some manufactures are developing off road versions of their hatchbacks. The ground clearance will be pumped up, wheels will be larger and there will be some black claddings on the lower body too. A quick and easy way to make an SUV for impatient car manufactures. But the success of this semi hatch SUV s would not be as delightful as a normal complete SUV.
Cross Punto willget a semi SUV feeling
Fiat Cross Punto

Fiat recently planned to develop an SUV version of the Punto called Cross Punto. The cross Punto is basically the ordinary Punto with and off-roding package.

A rendered image of Cross Punto is available(rendered by Indian autos blog) in here. The Cross Punto gets matte black plastic cladding on bumpers and lower side of the profile too. The suspension has been tweaked to increase ride height by a fair margin. Other black treatment includes grille, rear view mirrors and door handles. The car also gets roof rails to store additional luggage which also innovates the SUV robustness.

The Punto Cross over is a sensible option. Nothing has been done to the body. Just some plastic cladding, and suspension tweaks has been done, so it won't be that expensive with Rs 30000 -40000 more than  Punto hatch.

The Cross Punto will be more affordable than other big SUV s in the market. The Cross hatch will get all the benefits of an SUV and a hatch back too. It is compact and efficient as a hatch and has some off roding prudential of an SUV. But you won't get the complete SUV feeling that you want.

Fiat is still a small company in India, they have got only limited number of showrooms on their own. So they will start of with Cross Punto in the SUV market. Fiat has announced that Jeep will enter Indian market soon. Fiat also planned launching 500X and XL in India. But First Fiat will be looking to strengthen up their base with some inexpensive models like Cross Punto. Fiat will expand there dealer network by 2016, so we can expect some real Fiat SUVs in 2016 only.

So a Cross hatch or a fully complete SUV which is your option.
