BMW 1 series launch in India

BMW has confirmed that I series hatchback will be launched in India in 2013. So we can finally see the 1 series hatch on Indian roads by December 2013. BMW also introduced a coupe version of 1 series and speculated a four door sedan too.
But now BMW will only launch the 1 series hatch to India. The hatch will compete with the new Mercedes Benz A class coming in 2013. The 1 series hatch will be manufactured in BMW plant in Chennai. But it can only produce 11000 units per month. So BMW must consider a plant expansion with the high demand for 1 series.

The 1 series hatch has only got the name 1 series. It is as big as a 3 series and exterior design and detailing justifies it. The new 1 series hatch retains the traditional BMW DNA in it. You get two kidney grilles with seven slats each which is pure BMW trademark. The long and agile lines flow through the bonnet and forms a splendid sharp snout. You get some sleekly headlamps and sharp fog lamps too which makes the front end of the car very elegant. The car has a luxury feel to it while looking at compared to the sporty styled A class hatch.

At the side profile you get massive alloy wheels, 17 inch or 18 inch depending on the variant. The car is as long as a sedan and resembles to a stretched version of the Suzuki Swift from the sides. The rear of the hatch is bestowed in a robust manner to give it a chiseled look.

The interiors of 1 series hatch shows some signs of cost cutting although it has a pretty nice cabin. The seat fabric and leather finish on the doors looks good. The central console is nicely layed out with the display screen pasted to the top. But when you look at the cabin in whole you will miss the BMW you used to see.
The 1 series will be build in the new 3 series platform so there will be no compromise in space.

The 1 series is globally variable in a 1.6 l petrol unit and 2.0 diesel unit globally. The petrol unit has a 136 HP and a 170 HP version while the diesel has a 116 HP, 143 HP and 184 Hp version. But BMW will consider only the 16 HP petrol and 143 HP diesel for the Indian market. May be a higher powered engine after some time.

The 1 series hatch will be targeting young Indians who like to have a real driver car. The 1 series is build in rear wheel drive, so expect plenty of enthusiasm and agility in speeds and corners. The 1 series hatch will be small, powerful accurate and fun to drive. But some features and quality has been cut off to keep the rpces low. Overall a perfect pure sporty hot hatch. Expect the 1 series on India in late 2013. Price tag: 16-18 lakhs.
